The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word "tura mali," which translates roughly as "stone with mixed colors." The name refers to the tourmaline's magnificent array of colors, which displays an impressive spectrum of red, orange, yellow, blue, and violet. An ancient Egyptian legend also tells of tourmaline, saying that on their long journey from the Earth's interior to the sun, the gemstones travel across a rainbow. During this long journey, they take on all the colors of the rainbow.
